I used to have a beautiful bar in my basement.
It was always stocked up with the finest and the most exotic spirits.
The gorgeous bar was one of the main reasons I fell in love with the house we moved in more than a decade ago.
Three months back, I demolished my bar.
We’re converting that space into a guest suite/entertainment hub.
I trashed all the spirits, bar accessories, and my precious collections and gifts — everything.
Nothing was spared. No mercy.
Nothing of the old remained.
We’re replacing the bar with a pantry, comfortable seating, and home theatre setup.
We’re not quite there yet, but we’re making progress.
Why did I knock off my bar?
A few years ago, I used to be a victim of OVERTHINKING — not many people are aware, but it’s a serious issue that can have a cascading effect on your mental and physical health.
Overthinking is being imprisoned by your own limiting thoughts — and you don’t know you are a prisoner.
Work-related stress and anxiety started damaging my mental-health, and it led to addictions.
At one point, it also started impacting my physical health.
I was unconscious of the harm I was causing to myself until my wife made me realize that I was too entangled in my compulsive behaviours.
How I overcame my struggle with addictions and turned my life around (and also helped others do the same) is a post for another day.
But long story short, I eventually got over my addictions.
The basement bar was no longer useful.
It did not serve any purpose.
Every time I went to the basement, it only reminded me of my stressful times.
Just being in that space brought back dreadful memories from my past and stressed me out.
Those unwanted thoughts weren’t doing me any good.
I wanted to get rid of the thoughts that no longer served me.
I’ve come a long way.
Mentally, I’m in a much better place now.
So we decided to replace the bar with something better — an entertainment/guest suite.
It’s now a place where happy memories are being created as we speak.
There’s a reason I’m sharing this story with you...
I want you to see how our EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCES how we EXPERIENCE life.
Pay attention to this…
HOW we EXPERIENCE the PRESENT influences our THOUGHTS and FEELINGS.
MEMORIES are formed and stored through those thoughts and feelings — both GOOD and BAD.
It is indeed POSSIBLE to change your thoughts and how you feel by SIMPLY CHANGING or RE-ARRANGING your environment.
Do you have memories from your past that no longer serve you?
Observe yourself — see if your present environment triggers painful memories or trauma from your past.
If it does, maybe you should look into it.
Perhaps, it’s time to alter, enhance, or re-arrange your environment in some way, shape, or form…
…so nothing of the old remains, and you create a mental space to build and cherish pleasant memories.
You don’t have to break the bank.
A weekend trip…long drive…a walk in the park…declutterring your living space…taking out the trash…
Or anything else you can do to change up your environment a bit, will go a long way.
I wish you nothing but the very best 👊
