I was next in line for the viewing.
My turn came. I froze.
The realization hit me hard.
The lesson I learned that day is etched into my psyche.
He lay in a box, utterly still.
My first funeral abroad.
I worked for a prestigious firm in Connecticut.
Newly married, my wife was looking for a job. We spread the word.
My wife, an exceptional software programmer, had left her dream job in India to be with me in the U.S. That career meant everything to her. She had sacrificed it for our life together.
I urged her to find a challenge. She agreed.
Before LinkedIn, recruiters hunted for talent. They pursued you. Literally.
One day, my neighbor called. His friend, a recruitment consultant, was hiring. He invited us to lunch with the consultant.
An ambitious man in his thirties, resourceful, full of ideas. He arrived with his wife and two little girls.
It was his first foray into recruitment consulting. He had left a secure job to chase his dream. The risk shook me. A wife. Two kids. And yet, he leaped into uncertainty.
"The decision wasn’t easy," he admitted. "But this is what I always wanted."
My wife was his first client. He already had a role lined up for her.
We spent hours discussing job requirements. He assessed her skills and was sure she'd get hired.
On the way home, my wife was elated. "I’ll ace this interview," she said.
We also talked about his family. His wife. His daughters. The love they shared. That image stayed with us.
That night, my wife polished her resume. At 1 AM, she hit send and crashed.
The next morning, at 9 AM, our neighbor called.
When I heard the news, I kept asking, "What? Are you sure?"
My wife, still asleep, sensed my shock. It woke her up.
I hung up and looked at her, still reeling.
"He passed away last night."
She grabbed her laptop. His reply stared back at her. 1:11 AM. Just eleven minutes after she had sent her resume.
She read it out loud, hands shaking.
"Great profile! I’ll arrange the interview next week. You’ll get this job. All the best!"
Those were probably his last words.
I was at the funeral service. My wife was too disturbed to join me.
Eulogies echoed. I couldn’t focus. My eyes stayed on his daughters. Playing. Laughing. Oblivious that their father was gone.
I had a hundred questions. No answers.
Why him? Why now? Did his girls think he was just sleeping?
I was next in line for the viewing.
My turn came. I froze.
He lay in a box, utterly still.
I had never seen anything so peaceful. And terrifying. Dead stillness.
The realization hit me hard.
The lesson I learned that day is etched into my psyche.
We all come with an expiration date.
Everything in life is uncertain.
The ONLY CERTAINTY is death.
Death isn’t an event that suddenly happens one day.
From the moment we’re born, we start dying. It’s a progression.
And one day, when we least expect it, the process completes.
Life is fragile. Held together by an invisible thread. Like a balloon, ready to pop. When? No one knows. But pop it will. Guaranteed.
Yet, we live as if we’re immortal. As if time is infinite.
What if we reminded ourselves of our mortality every day?
Wouldn’t that make us more present?
Why not cherish the little things? Be there for our loved ones? Call our parents? Travel like it's our last day? Work on our dreams—not for the outcome, but for the sheer joy of creation?
Just loosen up.
Because no matter what happens—good or bad—life itself is a bonus. A gift.
In the end, nothing matters. We’ll all be in a box one day.
So why not live like EVERYTHING MATTERS?
It’s a choice we can make.
We’ve rented a Ferrari (this body). It’s been gassed up (this life).
Best part? It’s free.
Why let it rust in a garage?
Drive it like there’s no tomorrow.
Because one day, there won’t be.
All you have is this ONE DAY.
Go live it to the FULLEST.
